Audience Feedback

Today we pitched out treatment to our media class to get their opionions and comments on our treatment. In general we recieved postive responses and the class seemed to like our ideas for our music video.

Idea thats the class like:
  • The idea of the photos burning at the end of the video as this provides a connotation that the relationship is over.
  • The way flashbacks will be protayed in the video to show past tense and how this will provide a linear narrative along with the present tense.
  • Locations of where we would film certain scenes in our video.
  • Effects we will use such as flashbacks and time lapses.
We also recieved constructive critcism in which we took on board they were the following:
  • Be cautious of lighening issues. We had ideas to film in the evening when the sun is setting to create a amazing scenary in the background however after this issue was raised we discussed it in our group and came to conclusion to film in only daylight hours.
  • Be cautious of audiences in the background looking into the camera shot. Some locations that we are planning to film will be extemely busy as they are in heart of london and we must be aware of individuals ruining the shot.
I think the pitching of our treatment was succesful and it will also beneficial as we could get ideas from our audiences so this will help us know what they liked and disliked about the ideas for our music video and also changes could be made if necessary. Changes we made such as not filming when it about to get dark and also when we go to a location set up our equipment in a place that does not interfere with the public.

Case study 3

Case study 3 – Jason Derulo – What if
In my third case study I will look at music video ‘What If’ performed by Jason Derulo. The music video is directed by Ethan Lather and it produced by the Warner Bro Label. It is a single is of pop genre and it part of the self-entitled Jason Derulo Album. The single was released on 26th of July 2010. The length of the video is 4 minutes and 16 seconds. The video starts off with a slow instrumental background sequence of piano before the song enters a rhythmic beat of both piano and drums.

Synopsis
The music video begins with Jason Derulo and his girlfriend moving in together, Derulo takes a diamond engagement ring out of the nightstand and puts it in his pocket as she comes into the room. Derulo offer to get the last box out of the van but she refuses and leaves to get the last box from the moving truck. While crossing the street, a driver from another car is texting on his phone and nearly hits her.  Suddenly Derulo hears the car brake skids and runs out of the house and towards her to push her out of the way of the car. Just about when he is going to push her away the camera goes to a freeze frame. A clock on the nightstand begins to tick slower until it eventually stops before going backwards. Time begins to go in reverse; Derulo’s relationship with his girlfriend is shown as if the video is being rewinded back to the beginning. When the video shows their first time they met, time stops going backwards and goes back to normal. This time, as he walks past her, he does not stop and talk to her. Therefore their relationship never happened. He looks back at her before he continues walking. She disappears from his memories and from a picture as the first encounter never happened the future is rewritten to save her life this is shown as the video ends back on the street, as the car is about to hit his girlfriend, she disappears as does the moving truck and the car just contuines to drive off.

The video is narrative based but it done in a unique way where the story is told backwards. The incident of the video is shown at the start and the audience go on a journey of the past in the video where they see the relationship between the two characters unfold in the music video right up to point of the first meeting of the individuals. As the video goes the audience understand more of the story that is being told. The incident that happened at the start of the video then changes as in the video as time goes back there are factors in the video that change the course of the future.
Themes and Motifs
The theme in this video is about the future there is a lot of emphasis on time in this video as they are numerous shots of a clock. Also the concept of the video is unique and different from other music videos as the music video is show backwards showing the present at the start of the video working along the video showing the past until it shows the very first encounter at the end of the video. Another theme in the video is also forbidden love,  In the video Jason can be seen wanting to be with the girl however he knows what would happen if they did get together as he knows that them getting together causes her death therefore he must stop himself from talking to her to save her life.

Representation
The video starts off a close – up shot of Derulo placing a picture frame of him and his girlfriend near the alarm clock on his bedside table this is a visual illustration of what the song will be about which what the future holds for the couple. Jason can be seen taking out an expensive engagement ring and as his girlfriend goes to get the last box from the truck he focuses on the ring and the beginning lyrics start with ‘What if?, I’m the one for you and you’re the one for me? What if...’ this tells the audience that he is questioning about future of their relationship. Suddenly a tyre screech can be heard and a close up shot shows the box full of glass the girl she was holding dropping and smashing on the floor. Jason runs out and loud heartbeats can be heard and this to emphasis the dramatic and intense moment.

The scene also cuts to the close up shot of the clock on the nightstand as it zooms in it shows the clock ticking over second by second with the second dial clearly being heard this corresponds with editing technique of slow motion to show the car gradually coming closer about to hit the girl and this is to represent that Jason is nearly out of time and there is little he can do. The video also cuts to the picture frame of them to together and this is to connote what he may be about to lose. However just when the car is about to hit the girl there is a freeze frame and the scene cuts to that of the nightstand clock which shows the clock stopping. The second dial then suddenly begins to go backwards and this represents time reversing and the instrumental beat of the song starts to build its way into the song.

The video is then shown in reverse as Jason is running backwards towards the house and the broken glasses pieces together and goes back into the box. There is a fast cutting rate and this represents that time is going back quick. The lyrics of the song are told before the accident has happened so Jason envisions how life would be so good together and thinks that they are made for each other and that fate bought them together. ‘If you are the one then us meeting is fate, future with a dog called a ben and a house with a fireplace’. The lyrics are sung in a heartfelt voice and this represents how Derulo desperately wants a happy life with her, however he questions the future and this is shown when the video cuts to scene of him in the park where they originally met and a close up shot shows him lip synching ‘But we can’t we can’t tell the future no, but that’s just the beauty of the world we know.’ A long shot also shows people in background walking but backwards still illustrating that time is going in reverse however Derulo is not pacing backwards but in the standing in the middle of the frame as the vocal point of the shot and this is because this scene tells the audience that it is separate from the narrative.
Also close up of Jason Derulo’s face show his emotion which represents his worry of not knowing what the future holds for the both of them. There video then shows flashbacks of their time spent with Jason and his girlfriend where it can be seen him feeding her strawberry’s, washing the dog together and him teaching her how to play the piano while he sings “picture me on one knee with a perfect diamond ring and if you said then we’d have our wedding on the beach”. This shows how much they are fond of each other and the amazing chemistry between the two and how he feels that they are the perfect match.
The next shot then shows close-up shot of a phone erasing a number the audience then see the first encounter of them together where the camera uses a shot reverse shot to show both of them smiling at each other and talking and this shows the first time they met and the instant connection between the two. However the video is still rewinding but at a very slow pace and Derulo gets up and walks backwards and rests his feet on the car and this is to show that slowly the time is about to stop reversing.  There is then a close up shot of Derulo’s watch on his wrist and it shows the dials going backwards until its stops at 1.25 the first moment he saw the girl sitting on the bench smiling at him this represents the first moment they saw each other and this is also a significant moment of the video as it shows where it all started and where is has eventually gone back to lead up to. Also as the watch has stopped reversing it means time has stopped going backwards and that it now the present. This time as he walks towards the girl he passes her without looking or speaking to her only to glance back and wave. This shows that Derulo has been re-written the past and so the future has now changed for both of them. The picture frame showing the picture of them together the girl disappears from the picture, the moment in the kitchen where he covers up her eyes to reveal a surprise an editing technique is used to evaporate her out of the frame.
The freeze frame from earlier on the video where the car is about to hit the girl is then shown again but this time the girl, the moving van and the box on the road dissolve from the freeze frame and when the picture unfreezes the car passes along the road without an incident and this shows how them two never meeting has saved her from the accident which would have happened if they had gotten together and moved in.
In terms of mise en scene the video uses clocks and watches to emphasise that time is going backwards. Also the in the scene where Derulo is teaching the girl the play the piano the lightening in the room Is dark and this is done to create an intimate setting. However in the park where Derulo lip syncs and where they meet artificial lightening is used and this is to create scenery where it would be the perfect place to meet a person that you like. Also throughout the video Jason derulo only wears black costumes and this connotes loss as in the video at the start there is accident where his about to lose his girlfriend but also at the end he never talks to the girl so he may feel alone and lost without that special someone.
Target Audience
Audiences who would like this music video would be into pop and R&B. The target audience is expansive in that both teenagers and adults would like this video. The music video makes the audience question situations in life where they think about things that could have gone differently. Audience are encouraged to by this record as the video is distinctive in a way that no other video has used the concept of telling the story of the music video from the end to the beginning. This a unique selling point for this video as audience would like this new refreshing way that the video is portrayed.
Ideas that can be subverted into my video
One of the elements that I would like to use in my music video from this case study is the unique way they the video uses the clock and uses special effects to turn the dial backwards to illustrate  that time is going in reverse and that the video is showing the past. It is a creative idea which I would use in my video to show the audience a period of time in my video that was in the past.  Also I like the way that in the scene of Jason Derulo lip synching in the park in the background people are swiftly moving past him without taking notice of him and he is the focus point of the shot it creates an interesting shot. I would use a similar sort of idea where my main character in my music video will be lip synching in a scene where individuals are moving past him in the background ideally this will be on a busy street then later on in editing I would fast forward the pace of the people in the background and this will create an artistic element into the shot.

Case Study 2

Case Study 2 – Chipmunk – Oopsy Daisy

The Single Oopsy Daisy is performed by R&B artist Chipmunk and is part of his debut album ‘I Am Chipmunk’ It was written by Talay Riley and was produced and directed by Kyle James and Pete Parker. The song was released in October 4th 2009 and the song reached number 1 in the charts on October the 11th 2009. The single comes under the genre of Pop and the music video is 3 minutes and 36 seconds. I will analyse this video see how the music video uses camera, editing and mise-en-scene for representation also how it targets it audience and I can use ideas for my own project.
Synopsize
The song Oopsy daisy is about two young couples splitting up after the girl in the video makes the decision to leave as she feels if they stay together she will only hurt him again. The couple have tried to give chances for their relationship to work out but it seems that it does not work out. The song starts off with Chipmunk arriving to the big modern house to find no one in the house, he looks around the house but it is empty. He finds a letter on the bed telling him that she has left and he looks upset and throws the letter on the floor and walks away. He then pictures the past and see’s both of them fighting and suddenly the illusion of them disappears by a quick spit ball of fire and this created via a special effect. He then picks up a frame with a picture showing them together he looks unhappy and distraught and then suddenly drops the picture of the floor and walks over it. As he goes downstairs he again sees an illusion of her stroking his head on the sofa and before he knows it the spit ball of fire erases the illusion. Also throughout the video switches  to scenes of the girl by herself looking upset and troubled lip synching through the chorus of the song and there is also a scene in which chipmunk in surrounded by a ring of fire
The song is performance based as both the female and male lead in the video performs in the video.  The girl in the video sings the chorus while the rest of the song is sung by the male lead. The video is performance based as it shows how both the characters feel in the video. Also the video being performance based helps the audience understands how Chipmunk feels while he sings the song.
Representation
At the beginning of the video we see chipmunk coming out of the car unaware of what is going to happen the camera shows a close up shot of his face as he looks cool and relaxed. We then see a mid-shot of the girl in the video who looks troubled as he clutches a letter close to her chest as the lyrics in the video go ‘ Crushed your heart with the palm of my hands if you walk out baby I’ll understand cause all I do is hurt you again.’ This represents the girl as the shallow yet candid as she is the one breaking the up the relationship. There are three different sections in the story there is the girls scene where she is by herself, chipmunks scene where he sings towards the camera and the narrative of them together in the video.
When the girl sings in the video close up shot of her mouth is used to show her lip synching along with the song. Her voice is very gentle and this is because the lyrics she sings must be sung in a way which remorseful. She also looks down towards the floor many times and this body language connotes that she feels unhappy and apologetic for what she had to do.

There scene where chipmunk is looking to find her in the house a slow cutting rate is used to show that as he looks around he cannot see her anywhere. However, fast cutting rate is used when it cuts to Chipmunk lip syncing and the beat of the song also gathers pace. When is he in the bedroom a wide angle shows a letter on the bed and when chipmunk opens the letter a close up shot shows his face and he looks distraught and his head drops towards the floor and as he strokes his head with his hands and this reaction tells the audience that this was the break-up later from the girl that she has left.  His reaction also represents his shock to discover that is she left him.
As Chipmunk stands up a wide angle shot shows the letter dropping from his hands and slow motion is used to show the letter fluttering towards the floor and this shows the audience visually his reaction towards the letter.
There is then a special effect used in where the camera zooms into Chipmunks eyes and into his iris and from that comes a scene of where Chipmunk is surrounded by a ring of fire. This connotes to what he is thinking deep inside his thoughts and the camera technique used here is meant to make the audience believe that they are going into his mind to see how he feels. . The camera then uses bird’s eye view shot to show the ring of fire and chipmunk swaying his hands in the middle as he sings ‘if this is really the end then I’m going to find cupid and put him in headlock, like why did you pick on me why did you pick in on the pretty boy like me I don’t need good luck I just need a girl who gives me good love’. This shows how chipmunk finds hard to believe that there relationship is over he feels love has been tough on him and that he just needs someone who loves him without fights and arguments.
Editing techniques are used to create Illusions which are creatively used in the video to show the past tense of the two together, the illusions connote that he reliving the memories about what caused the relationship to end the way it did and he is looking back on that as he now realises where things had gone wrong. Also a special effect is used where a fire erases out the flashback and this shows that there relationship is now destroyed and the fire represents this well as it burns and destroys things.
There is then a scene where we see Chipmunk is holding a frame showing the couple together happily posing. He looks on to the frame and stares at the picture which connotes that he reminiscing about his time together with the girl however the lyrics then go on ‘Look honey I didn’t diss you therefore I Shouldn’t miss you, It’s like round and round we go I’d prefer if you left me alone cause I can’t take the pain anymore’ this shows that he is struggling to left get over here and but also he has enough of the drama of their relationship and that he wants to move on from this from this pain. The lyrics corresponds with the video as he drops the picture frame on the floor and walks over it which shows that he is trying to forget about her and what they had as it no longer exists.
As the song continues the chorus of the song overlaps many scenes and chipmunk goes down the stairs trying to forget about the girl however he fails as when he look towards the sofa he sees another illusion of them together where he sees the girl stroking his head and he sleeps on her lap. This connotes how he cannot avoid thinking about her as much as he wants she always plays on her mind. The illusion shows the happy moment of them together where they can both be seen laughing and smiling together. However, like before the Illusion erases after a matter of seconds to show that is now history and those moments are now distant memories.
There is also a scene where the lyrics correspond with a cutaway scene when the lyrics go ‘Destruction like fire all around you that’s why I have to go’ the cutaway shows chipmunk surrounded by a ring of fire which connotes that she must leave otherwise he will got hurt and the fire is the visual illustration.
Near the end of the video chipmunk goes is walking around the streets of London lip synching along with the song while the camera tracks his movements at one point the camera pans across off chipmunk to show another couple sitting on the bench looking happy and this connotes how chipmunk feels hard to cope with the break-up of his relationship while others are happy, he also must come to terms that he single as he sings’ You seen me grow from a boy to a man so this must really be the end of the road’.
As the video comes to a closing chipmunk comes across the first place he met his girlfriend and the camera shows a close up shot of him looking on in the distance which tells the audience that he is thinking about a memory the camera then recreates the moment of they met where chipmunk stops the girl and they can seen smiling, talking and exchanging numbers. This scene represents much how much he liked her when he first saw her and this memory make him think how much he misses her. The video then cuts to shots of girl who looks down which represents that although it hurts her she did what was best for him as the song ends with same two verses at the start of the song . The video then cuts to the chipmunk who can be seen looking miserable and disheartened as he gets to grip that the person he loved has left forever.

In terms of mise en scene the video uses natural lightening in the house the sunlight provides the lightening through the glass panel of the house. Also near the end of the video outdoor locations are used where chipmunk is walking through the streets at night the street lamps provide background lightening he wears a black jacket which goes with the scenery that he is in. Fire is also used in the video in the scene where chipmunk is surrounded by a ring of fire to connote that he is going to get hurt if he stays in the relationship. Also the props that are used in the video show chipmunks wealth as he drives up to the house in a chauffeur driven car he wears designer shades and jacket. Also in the close up shots of the girls lip syncing she can be seen wearing make-up such as dark eye liner and eye shadow and this co-ordinates with the colour scheme of the setting behind her.

Target Audience
This music video is about the struggle and break-up of a young couple’s relationship. Its niche target audience would ideally be teenagers as both the male lead and the female are teenagers and so this market can easily relate to the video as the artists are in the same age category as them. Audiences who like this song would be into R &B and pop genre. Audiences are encouraged to buy the record as it shows the difficulty of a relationship and the trauma’s that comes with it and many people have been through that, and therefore this song makes an emotional connection with audiences.

Ideas that can be subverted into my video
In this video the special effects are used very well. The illusions are used as flashbacks to show what there was once was but these illusions then disperse which bring the video back to present tense. In my video I would use a similar sort of idea where the male lead envisions seeing the girl that has broken up with him only to realise that she is not there and that he is only imagining her in his head. Also in this video the male lead looks on at a photo frame showing a happy moment which he looks on at affectionately but he then drops the frame on the floor and walks away to showing that what they had is now gone and that is now that past and he must move on. In our music video I have a similar sort of idea where the lead burns a photo of him and his girlfriend together to get rid of those visual memories and move on from the heartbreak.

Case Study 1

Case Study One – Bruno Mars – Grenade

In first case study I will look at the music video ‘Grenade’ performed by Bruno Mars. This is Pop song written and produced by Bruno Mars and the Smeezingtons. The single is part of the album ‘Doo-Wops and hooligans’ and was released on September 28 2010. The length of the video is 4.10 minutes. The songs start of in a slow tempo but crescendos into musically and lyrically into the climax of the song where lively beats start to enter.

Synopsis

The song starts of by setting the scene where we can see it is dark and raining which in effect tells us this song will be a not be a cheerful song. We then see Bruno mars sitting alone on a bed which again sets the mood.  We also see Bruno Mars looking at a picture frame showing a picture of him and a woman which tells the audience that he is anguishing over a woman. There is also a second narrative in which the video cuts between. In the second narrative the audience see’s Bruno mars dragging a piano with a rope through a tunnel.  We then see a scene in which Bruno Mars encounters a gang who confront him and throw a picture of the girl on the floor he looks dejected yet does not feel intimated of afraid of the gang as his mind is elsewhere and picks up the song and moves along. When he arrives outside the woman’s house he sees that she is with another man and he looks down deflated and leaves. We then see Bruno mars drag the piano up to a rail track where we see a cutaway of the rail barricade lights flashing and then see Bruno mars playing the piano on as we can hear a train horn in the background. Last scene from a wide angle shows the train approaching Bruno Mars and the video cuts to black.

The music video is performance based. Bruno Mars can be seen singing the lyrics to the song in the bedroom scene.  At the start of the song he sings in a low placed tone which corresponds with the background beat which shows he is upset and hurt. Nearing to the middle to the end of the song he sings in a high pitch tone which shows his suffering and pain. The video must be performance based so that the audience understand the emotion of the singer and this in turn is also more relatable to the audience.

Themes and Motif
Themes in this song included heartache Bruno Mars is heartbroken cause the girl he loves does not love him back, another theme is also betrayal as Bruno Mars would do anything for her but he knows deep down she wouldn’t do the same and feels upset about that.

Representation
In the music video Bruno mars is represented as upset and devastated as the woman he loves does not love him back. The video starts with a denotation as it is dark and gloomy which connotes the singers feeling of sadness. Lightening of the room is dark and the only thing that stands out is Bruno Mars orange t-shirt and this is used to show that he is the main vocal point. The fact that he is alone shows that he wants to isolate himself from everyone else as he thinks about his lover. In a scene a special effect is used to make the picture frame that he is holding suddenly crack this connotes that the relationship they had is over.

The scene which he pulls the piano through the tunnel shows how he would do anything for as his desire for is her is endless. The chorus of the song also shows this as it goes ‘I’ll catch a grenade for ya, throw my hand on a blade for ya, jump in front of train for ya; you know I would do anything for ya’.  He feels hurt that although he would anything for her she wouldn’t do the same. The close up shots of his feet stumbling as he is walking down the road represents his struggle to do anything for her just as long as she loves him back. There is also a difference in contrast when the video switches between the two narratives. When Bruno Mars is singing in his room the lightening is always dark however near the end of the video when the girl appears through the window with another man the scenery is
sunny and bright this represents the difference of feelings between the two individuals as Bruno Mars is distraught and heartbroken while the girl is happy with her new life.

Bruno Mars is constantly looking down at the floor his body language shows that feels dejected and disheartened and this makes the audience feel sorry for him and feel for him as they can see how much he loves the girl he gets the sympathy from the audience who watch the video.
There are close up shots of Bruno Mars lip syncing which is to show the emotion in his voice. He is passionate about the way he feels. His facial expressions can be seen to show his agony and he rarely ever looks directly at the camera and this shows his hurt and demoralised. Also in the video he empathises the word ‘Ever’ twice as he goes ‘YOU NEVER EVER EVER LOVED ME’ and he screams this out loud and this represents how much he is hurt.
Furthermore, in the scene where he drags away the piano from the woman’s house the camera is shown from a point of view shot of the woman and as he walks away the image of Bruno Mars becomes blurred this represents how she already quickly forgotten about him. Bruno Mars appearance also looks scruffy he wears a shirt with the top unbuttoned and his tie is loosely hanging off him and this shows that he has been through a horrible time.
Near the end of the video Bruno mars goes up to the railway as he has the intention to end his life. There are cutaway shots of individuals in the public looking at him as they can see that something is wrong with him as he looks demoralised pulling up a piano up the road. There is a fast cutting rate and the scene cuts to a shot of railway crossing light which is flashing red which connotes danger. Long shots are used to show the scene which is the railway tracks however; the camera switches to close up shots of Bruno Mars as he sings so the audience do not know if he is actually on the railway tracks. The last shot of the video then shows Bruno Mars sitting and playing the piano as the train approaches him chimney blaring the video then cuts to black which in turn tells the audience how the video has ended without showing the consequence.
Target Audience
This music video is about the heartache of the male lead who sings of how the person he was with never loved him. This can be generalised to mainstream audiences as they could relate to this as they may have been through a personal heartbreak and can understand the singer’s emotions in the video and this how they are encouraged to buy the record as this song can make an audience think about a past experience. The chorus is catchy but also meaningful and can easily stick into audiences heads which in turn will make them want to buy the single. Audiences who would like this song would be into the genre of Acoustic Pop. Also the niche category of teenage female audience would like this song as Bruno Mars is young, popular and also would feel an emotional attachment to the artist.
Ideas which can be subverted into my own music video
Elements from the video of grenade that I like and would like to include in my own video would be the picture frame moment in which Bruno Mars looks back on the picture of him and his former lover. This gives the audience the visual illustration of what the artist in the video is missing. In our video our male lead will have photos of the time when he was together with his lover and it will show the audience what there once was. Our ending sequence will show the male lead ripping up the photo into pieces which shows that the relationship they had is now over. Furthermore, the artist’s body language in the video shows a lot about how he feels.  I would like to incorporate this into my music video as it shows what he feels inside but in a physical element.

Chosen Song - Owl City - Take it all away

We as a group have chosen to make a music video of the single Take It All Away by Owl City. We have listened to various songs and delibrated over which song to use. In the end we had two songs that we were confident would make a good music video which were, Owl City - Take It All Away and Ed Sheeran - The City. We as group decided that we should go for Owl City - Take It All Away as we had a more clear vision of the various things that we could incorporate into the music video of that song.
